RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for Bachelor students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.
Approximately 300 scholarships are awarded, meaning about one of every three applicants receives a placement.
Applicants who are not US, Canadian or British citizens but who study at a US, Canadian or British institution may still apply. Applicants must have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree by the time of the internship. Applicants must retain undergraduate status throughout the duration of the internship. German language ability is not required.
Funding varies by program duration. Scholarships have been issued as follows: 8 weeks at 1,300 Euro, 10 weeks at 1,625 Euro, and 12 weeks at 1,950 Euro. Airfare to and from Germany is not included.
