EUCE/ESC Klinzing Grant Competition in European Union Studies (University of Pittsburgh)

The EUCE/ESC offers research awards to graduate students and professional school students to support their work on any aspect of post-WWII European integration.  Named for the former Vice-Provost for Research, George Klinzing, these awards are designed to assist students who need to pursue their research agenda in Europe, or to participate in an internship directly related to their research interests.  For advanced graduate students, these awards can be used to support dissertation write-up.  Research is typically conducted in the summer.

European Commission Internships in Europe

The European Commission represents the interests of the EU as a whole.  It proposes new legislation to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, and it ensures that EU law is correctly applied by member countries.

Paid traineeships of five months with the European Commission (or some executive bodies and agencies of the European Institutions, such as the European External Action Service or Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation) are available.  There are approximately 1,400 places available each year.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • be university graduates (minimum Bachelor degree)
  • have very good knowledge of English or French or German
  • have very knowledge of a second EU official language (required for nationals of EU countries)

Delegation of the European Union to the United States Internships

The Delegation of the European Union to the United States of America offers internships to young university graduates with no, or only limited (one year maximum), relevant professional experience, as well as to students in the final years of university where the traineeship is a complement to their academic training.

The internship program offers dynamic individuals the opportunity to learn about the work of one of the EU’s largest and most active diplomatic missions and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the EU-US relationship.  Interns hone important skills in the field of international relations and acquire practical experience in a specialize area of the Delegation’s work.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • have completed a minimum of three years of university-level courses, preferable in political science, law, economics, development studies, environmental studies, human rights/humanitarian law or communications
  • be fluent in English
  • be computer literate

Berlin Startup Program for Young Entrepreneurs – via Cultural Vistas

Cultural Vistas offers students the unique opportunity to complete an internship with a startup company in Berlin, the German capital of innovation and entrepreneurship.  Participants gain skills custom-tailored to their career goals and previous work experience, as well as an exciting glimpse into Berlin’s thriving startup scene.  Internships last up to three months are all full-time (30-40 hours per week).

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • have a demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship and startup culture
  • be interested in completing an internship in a field closely related to their studies
  • be fluent in English.  Prior German language knowledge is not required but can be helpful for daily life in Berlin
  • be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship in a degree program at a higher education institution (bachelor, master, or equivalent)
  • have completed at least four semesters of study toward their current degree program by the start of the internship
  • be 18-30 years of age
  • have some prior relevant professional experience in their career field (internship, volunteer, work, etc.)

Independent Work Abroad in Germany – via Cultural Vistas

The Independent Work Abroad Program in Germany provides work authorization for students enrolled at US universities and colleges.  Enrolled students from Canada and non-US students attending US college and universities are also eligible.

Participants find their own host companies and negotiate the terms of employment.  Programs start individually, usually at the beginning of each month.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • be US and international citizens enrolled in US colleges and universities and Canadian citizens enrolled in US or Canadian colleges and universities
  • have at least two years of university level studies in the field of their major
  • have basic knowledge of German (company can waive this requirement)

Summer Internship Program in Spain – via Cultural Vistas

The Cultural Vistas Summer Internship Program in Spain provides an excellent opportunity for US and Canadian university students to gain work experience abroad, improve their Spanish language skills, and experience Spanish life and culture firsthand.

Internships are available in a variety of fields, including but not limited to, business/finance, tourism, IT, media/communications, international relations, the nonprofit sector, Spanish studies, and economics.  The program runs from late-May until mid-August.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • have US or Canadian citizenship
  • be enrolled at a college or university before, during, and following the internship
  • be 19-25 years of age
  • have two years of post-secondary instruction in Spanish or the equivalent
  • have high-intermediate Spanish and be able to function in a Spanish-speaking work environment immediately upon arrival in Spain
  • have a minimum of two years of university-level studies

Funding
All internships are unpaid; however, scholarships are available to qualified participants.  All participants receive a scholarship application following acceptance to the program.

The Cultural Vistas Summer Internship Program in Germany provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable international work skills, improve German language abilities, and experience German life and culture firsthand.

Internship placements are available in a variety of fields, including but not limited to, business, engineering, finance, tourism, IT, media/communications, international relations, the nonprofit sector, German studies, and economics.  Internship duration is typically two to three months, with most students completing a three month internship.

  • be students, international and US, enrolled in US colleges and universities, and Canadian citizens enrolled in US or Canadian colleges and universities
  • have at least two years of university level studies in the field of their major
  • have two years of post-secondary instruction in German or the equivalent (extra language training is available, if needed)
