Friedl E. Kessler Memorial Fellowship (University of Pittsburgh)

The European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh has a number of scholarships available for students who plan on studying abroad in summer and fall terms.  To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the West European or European Union Studies Certificate Program.  While some preference is given to students enrolled in “Pitt in…” programs, students enrolled in any study abroad program in Europe are welcome to apply.

To help defray the costs of studying abroad, the European Studies Center/European Union Center of Excellence offers the Kessler Fellowship for study or research in Germany. The award is offered to a West European Studies or European Union Studies Certificate Program student on a competitive basis.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

  • be enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh
  • be enrolled in the West European Studies or European Union Studies Certificate Program
  • be studying German
  • have at least a 3.0 QPA

UAS7 (German Universities of Applied Sciences) – Study & Internship Program

UAS7 is a strategic alliance of seven leading German Universities of Applied Sciences committed to excellence in teaching and research.

Since 2006, the Study and Internship Program (SIP) has enabled highly qualified undergraduates from US and Canadian colleges and universities to experience the German approach to hands-on education at a member of UAS7, a consortium of Germany’s top universities of applied sciences.  SIP students spend a semester studying at a UAS7 campus and a semester interning.  Although most SIP students will apply for internships after arriving in Germany, you can request placement in a UAS7 research laboratory/institute internship in your application.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be:

  • full-time undergraduate students in good academic standing currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited US or Canadian college or university (US or Canadian citizenship is not required)
  • currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors in a field represented on UAS7 campuses: engineering, science, life sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art, design, journalism, social work

Funding
Successful applicants are eligible for two scholarships.  A maximum of one scholarship will be awarded per successful SIP applicant.  All SIP applicants will be considered for these scholarships during the admissions process.

UAS7 Travel Scholarship
€1,000 contribution to travel expenses for program participation.  A full tuition waiver and other program benefits are also included.

DAAD Scholarship
Generous support is provided by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) for the most competitive applicants to the UAS7 SIP and SP programs.  Financial support comprises €650 per month for living expenses and €850 contribution to travel expenses.

If you want to focus on the opportunity to spend a semester as a UAS7 member institution, the Study Program (SP) is right for you.  Most SP students opt to study during the German Sommersemester, since the German Wintersemester runs into the spring term on most American campuses.

Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship Program

The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to attract outstanding young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The Payne Fellowship encourages the applications of members of minority groups who have historically been underrepresented in international development careers and those with financial need. Fellowship recipients can use the award to attend US graduate programs throughout the country; they will join the USAID Foreign Service upon completion of the program, as long as they successfully complete the Payne Program and USAID entry requirements.

Eligibility

  • be seeking admission to enter graduate school for a two-year program at a US university
  • have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application

Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service in which they can help formulate, represent and implement US foreign policy. The Rangel Program selects 30 outstanding Rangel Fellows in a highly competitive nationwide process and helps support them through two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. Fellows who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers.

Eligibility
Applicants must:

  • be US citizens
  • be seeking admission to enter graduate school for a two-year program at a US university
  • have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application

Funding
Up to $35,000 annually towards tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees for completion of two-year master’s degrees

Kosciuszko Foundation Scholarships

The Kosciuszko Foundation is dedicated to promoting educational and cultural exchanges between the United States and Poland and to increasing American understanding of Polish culture and history. The Foundation offers a variety of funding opportunities for US citizens and permanent residents of Polish descent including tuition scholarships and an exchange program for Americans to study language or conduct research in Poland.
